The Juxtaposition of Ford and Morgan

In Ragtime, E. L. Doctorow introduces two notable characters who existed in real life: J. P Morgan and Henry Ford. J. P Morgan is described as an extremely successful financier. Doctorow states that he was “a man born to extreme wealth who by dint of hard work and ruthlessness multiplies the family fortune till it is out of sight." (Doctorow 138). He is portrayed as the embodiment of upper class capitalism - making money off of a lot of money. On the other hand, Henry Ford is an up and coming businessman who has achieved great success selling cars. He was born a poor farmer, and worked his way to wealth. He is seen as the embodiment of the capitalistic “American Dream” - working one's way up to a higher class. Addie in her Coffin Originating in pre-revolution France, animal magnetism is a theory that details an invisible magnetic liquid inside all living beings. The misalignment of this liquid can cause illness and death - thus, ne must reorient their fluid to be cure d and in harmony with the natural world. Animal magnetism is widely considered a quack science. It plays an important role in Faulkner’s, “As I Lay Dying”. The first direct reference of animal magnetism occurs in Cash's chapter, when he talks about how he made Addie’s coffin. Our first clue to his beliefs occurs when he says the following: “In a bed where people lie down all the time, the joints and seams are made sideways, because the stress is sideways.” (PDF page 53). Childish Embarrassment Embarrassment. Universally known as the “jump in a hole and die” emotion, the feeling is almost ubiquitous among individuals. My embarrassment comes from many diverse sources - awkward jokes, spilled drinks and basically anything to do with public speaking. However, there was a time where my greatest mortification came from My Little Pony. When I was 4, my parents downloaded the My Little Pony world building app on my Ipad. I loved it. It was a child’s utopia - endless mini games, with different ponies and shops to collect. Everything about it was perfect to me - the artistic designs, the in-game coin system and the ability to city plan without constraint. At that time, I never felt embarrassed.
